Skate dates with my friends are one of my favorite winter activities, although I do have a talent for choosing the worst days to go. The day we went ice skating at the National Gallery of Art’s sculpture garden ended up being about 25 degrees with frigid winds that wouldn’t stop for anything. We ended up having the entire rink almost to ourselves, but the temperature made it difficult to enjoy. When I went to rent skates, they initially handed me a hideous pair of hockey skates to which I responded: “Do you have any cuter ones?” They did, but they were figure skates, which I had no idea how to use. Fortunately, I had Zac to drag me around the ice until I figured them out and realized that they were much easier than their uglier alternative.
